A commercial bus carrying twenty‑one passengers overturned and burst into flames on the Oko‑Olowo Expressway at Iye‑Maja Junction on Sunday at about 6:35 p.m. The incident left one passenger dead and several others with injuries that required medical attention. According to a statement from Hassan Hakeem Adekunle, the spokesperson for the Kwara State Fire Service, the bus suffered a tyre blowout while in motion. The sudden loss of pressure caused the driver to lose control, the vehicle somersaulted and the fuel ignited, creating a large fire that engulfed the cabin.

Firefighters from the Kwara State Fire Service arrived at the scene within minutes. Chief Fire Officer Alabi Muhammed coordinated the evacuation,

directing his teams to break open doors and pull passengers out safely. “The passengers were evacuated from the vehicle, with those who sustained injuries taken to the hospital for medical attention. Sadly, one person was confirmed deceased in the incident,” said the chief. Victims were taken to a nearby hospital in Ilorin where doctors are treating burns, fractures and other injuries. The deceased was a male passenger whose identity has not yet been released. The driver, who escaped with minor cuts, is cooperating with police investigations.

In the aftermath, Alabi Muhammed warned commercial vehicle operators to keep their buses in good condition. He urged regular inspection of tyres,

brakes, electrical wiring and other critical parts to avoid repeat tragedies. “We cannot afford such losses. Proper maintenance saves lives,” he added. The Kwara State Fire Service has launched a brief inquiry into the cause of the tyre blowout, but initial reports point to over‑inflated or worn‑out tyres as the likely trigger. The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) is also expected to investigate the crash to determine if road safety regulations were breached. Residents in Ilorin expressed shock over the incident, with many calling for stricter enforcement of vehicle maintenance standards on busy highways.

congestion often leads to hurried driving. The incident adds to a growing list of road accidents in Nigeria where tyre failures and poor vehicle upkeep are common factors. Authorities are being urged to intensify roadside inspections and public awareness campaigns. As of now, the injured remain in hospital, and the fire service continues to monitor the situation for any further health concerns among survivors. The death toll stands at one, with several others receiving treatment for injuries ranging from minor cuts to severe burns. This tragedy serves as a stark reminder that vehicle maintenance is not optional, especially for commercial operators whose passengers depend on safe transport.
